Planting a Rainbow

Planting a Rainbow
By: Lois Ehlert

Summery:

Planting a Rainbow is a 30 page book about flowers and gardening. The book starts off with a mother and child planing a rainbow. Through the book, there is no image of the child so if you do have a garden at home, you can make the child your own.

The following few pages talk about different types of gardening and when they have to be plated. For example the bulbs go into the ground fall time while the seeds are ordered later on for spring. When the weather turns warmer they go to the store for seedlings and then plan them with the seeds. As the mother and child watch the garden grow, the see all of the colors bloom and form beautiful flowers.

After the flowers have grown Ehlert does something very creative. Starting with a small tab page, she lists all of the wonderful red flowers in the garden. On the next page on a slightly larger tab, she then shows the orange flowers. She has all of the colors of the rainbow with the flowers that grow with the largest page being purple.

At the end of the book, both mother and child enjoy picking bouquets of flowers and when summer is over, they will enjoy the process all over again.

Pros:

  • Teaches about planting
  • Learn colors
  • Shows names of many different flowers
  • Board book
Cons:
  • I understand that this is an illustrated book, but I felt that a few of the flowers were a little to cartoony for me.
Suggestions:
  • After reading this book, go and do something flower related. If you have a garden let your child help. If you do not have a garden, take a trip to a local garden or a florist. It will be fun for your child to see more plants and all the different names not in the book.
  • If you are reading it to a really small child, have them point out the different colors as you read. As they say the colors, you can tell them the name of the flower in that color.
Age Range:
  • 3-8
Bottom Line:

I am really fond of  Planting a Rainbow because it has so much to offer. From learning colors to different types of flowers and getting involved in the garden, this book is one of those must haves.
