Kissing an octopus and other diversions

In Washington, a Pacific Giant Octopus is released into the wild with a kiss!  I dont know that Id kiss a cephalopod, but the picture of science center directer Patrick Mus doing it is pretty darling.

The German branch of PETA released a statement demanding that Paul the (psychic) octopus be released into the wild, claiming that octopuses are "capable of complex thought processes, they have short- and long-term memories, use tools, learn by observation, show different personalities and are particularly sensitive to pain."  Id argue that their first point is highly dependent on the definitions of "complex" and "thought processes", their second point says little about the intellectual capacity of an animal, their third point is contentious even among those who care, being supported by a very few examples, their fourth point is based on one study that (as far as I know) has not been replicated, their fifth point is only supported by anecdotal evidence (and "personality" is a very loosely defined term,) and their last point (again, as far as I know,) has never been specifically investigated.  Nonetheless, it makes good news.

In the town of Whyalla (where our heroes from the last link post were arrested for stealing cuttlefish,) cuttlefish are an important tourist trap, as well as possibly being a special, isolated genetic pool.  If I were in Australia, Id go see them.

In the most exciting recent news story (in my opinion, at least,) a deep sea squids penis is seen in action.  Really.  No, Im not joking.  Just click it.

Partially in response to the whole Pepsi-blog incident at Science Blogs (which seems to have mostly resolved pretty quickly,) Adam Bly, CEO of SEED Media Group has started a new blog, Science is Culture.  In response to the fiasco, Ive updated my blogroll to link to the new locations of those who left Science Blogs.

Ive also updated my format and added some new folks to the blogroll.  Im working on a few posts at the moment (including a cephalopod reading list with reviews,) so stay tuned!

BIOCHEMISTRY:

Biochemistry is a branch of Biology, which deals with the study of chemical components and the chemical processes in living organisms. A basic knowledge of biochemistry is essential for understanding anatomy and physiology, because all of the structures of an organism result from biochemical reactions. For example, photosynthesis, respiration, digestion, muscle contraction can all be described in biochemical terms.

COVALENT BOND:

Covalent bonds result when two or more atoms complete their electron shells by sharing electrons. When an electron pair is shared between two atoms, a single covalent bond is formed. An example is the bond between two hydrogen atoms to form a hydrogen molecule. Covalent bond stores large amount of energy.

METABOLISM:

All the chemical reactions taking place within a cell are collectively called metabolism. Metabolic processes are characterized as anabolism and catabolism.

ANABOLIC AND CATABOLIC REACTIONS:

Those reactions in which simpler substances are combined to form complex substances are called anabolic reactions. Anabolic reactions need energy. 



Energy is released by the break down of complex molecules into simpler ones. Such reactions are called catabolic reactions. 


Explanation Anabolic and catabolic reactions go side by side in the living cells. Complex molecules are broken down and the resulting smaller molecules are reused to form new complex molecules. Inter-conversions of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids that occur continuously in living cells are examples or coordinated catabolic and anabolic activities. The survival of an organism depends upon its ability to take some chemicals from its environment and use them to make chemicals of its living matter. For this reason, cells of every organism are constantly taking in new cellular materials and obtaining energy for their needs. Life of an organism depends upon the endless chemical activities in its cells. This chemical activity is maintained with a high degree of organization.

Earwig and the Witch

Earwig is used to getting her own way. An orphan left on the doorstep of St. Morwalds Home for Children, Earwig knows how to make others do her bidding. At her request the cook prepares her favorite lunch of shepherds pie, the matron hurries to keep her supplied in  red sweaters, and her fellow orphans indulge her in dimly-lit games of hide-and-seek, even the kids who are scared of the dark. Earwig is not among them. "Earwig was never frightened. She had a very strong personality."

This strong personality seems to meet her match when a strange couple visit the orphanage looking to foster a child. Till now Earwig has managed to fend off potential parents. For Earwig has no interest in leaving the orphanage. Why would she? Shes got everyone in the joint under her thumb.

The couple choose Earwig, despite her best efforts to look unlovable, and take her home to their bungalow at Thirteen Lime Avenue. From the start, Earwig suspects the couple of being not what they seem. Shes right. The "raggety, ribbly" woman in the big red hat is a bona fide witch and the man who has fiery eyes and what appear to be horns growing from his head is you-guessed-it. Earwig is put to work as the witchs assistant and spends her days pounding rat bones into powder and picking nettles from the garden. Her days of getting her own way are apparently over.

Or not. Earwig is a plucky child and she doesnt give in to despair. Refreshingly, she finds the odd situation shes in a challenge and one to be overcome not endured. Determined to learn magic, she pairs up with the witchs familiar, a talking black cat named Thomas, and together the two manage to turn the tables on the couple. By books end Earwig is once again firmly in the drivers seat. How she gets there makes for a fast, entertaining read.

Knowing this is Diana Wynne Jones last book made reading the story bittersweet. Although I cant know for sure, many signs pointed to this book being the first in a series. The question of Earwigs lineage (she was left at St. Morwalds with a tantalizing note pinned to her shawl) is left dangling, as is her friendship with Custard, a timid boy at the orphanage.

What is the difference between NSTEMI and STEMI



Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) are divided into:

1. STEMI - ST Elevation MI - the classical MI
2. NSTEMI - Non-ST Elevation MI.
3. UA - Unstable Angina

STEMI is when there is a transmural infarction of the myocardium - which just means that the entire thickness of the myocardium has undergone necrosis - resulting in ST elevation. Usually due to a complete block of a coronary artery (occlusive thrombus). This requires the use of thrombolytics like Streptokinase to lyse the thrombus. Evidence has proven that it is very effective and not as risky (Benefits > Risk)

UA or NSTEMI is when there is a partial dynamic block to coronary arteries (non-occlusive thrombus). There will be no ST elevation or Q waves on ECG, as transmural infarction is not seen. The main difference between NSTEMI and unstable angina is that in NSTEMI the severity of ischemia is sufficient to cause cardiac enzyme elevation.

Why is streptokinase not used in treating UA/ NSTEMI?

In patients with UA/NSTEMI, plaque stabilization to prevent progression of the disease is required. While fibrinolytics like Streptokinase benefit patients with STEMI, they may increase risk of bleeding complications for those with NSTEMI. This is also based on evidence - no benefit, more risk.

Summary:

1. STEMI - occlusive thrombus - ST elevation (and Q waves) - Cardiac Enzyme elevation - Fibrinolytics beneficial
2. NSTEMI - non-occlusive thrombus - NO ST/Q - Cardiac Enzyme elevation present - Fibrinolytics not beneficial
3. UA - non-occlusive thrombus - NO ST/Q - Cardiac Enzyme elevation absent - Fibrinolytics not beneficial

TB disease Causes and How to Overcome It

Causes of TB Disease
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria Mikobakterium tuberculosis. These bacteria are rod-shaped acid-resistant and thus also known as Batang Resistant Acid (BTA). This bacterium was first discovered by Robert Koch on March 24, 1882, to commemorate his services so that the bacteria are given the name of Koch bacillus. In fact, TB disease of the lungs is sometimes referred to as the Koch Pulmonum (KP).

Mode of transmission of TB Disease 
TB disease is usually transmitted through contaminated air with Mikobakterium tuberculosis bacteria that are released at the time of TB patient coughs, and in children the source of infection is generally derived from adult TB patients. These bacteria often enter when and accumulated in the lungs will breed a lot (especially in people with low immune system), and can be spread through blood vessels or lymph nodes. That is why infectious TB can infect virtually all body organs such as lungs, brain, kidney, gastrointestinal tract, bone, lymph nodes, etc., nevertheless organs

When Mikobakterium tuberculosis successfully infect the lungs, it soon will grow colonies of bacteria that form globular (rounded). Usually through a series of immunological reactions TB bacteria will endeavor inhibited through the formation of wall around the bacteria by lung cells. The mechanism of formation of the wall was made of the surrounding tissue into scar tissue and the TB bacteria will become dormant (resting). Dormant forms is what is actually seen as tubercles on the x-ray examination.

In some people with good immune systems, this form will remain dormant throughout his life. Whereas in those with immune systems that are less, these bacteria will have breeding tubercles grow so much. That many of these tubercles form a space inside the lungs. This space that would become the source of production of sputum (phlegm). Someone who has been producing sputum can be estimated is experiencing positive growth and excess tubercles infected with tuberculosis.

Increased transmission of infection has been reported at this time, many linked to several conditions, including worsening socio-economic conditions, not optimal public health service facilities, the increasing number of people who do not have a place to live and the epidemic of HIV infection. Besides a weak body resistance / decreased, and the number of bacteria is a virulence factor that plays an important role in the occurrence of TB infection.

Symptoms of TB DiseaseSymptoms of TB disease can be divided into general symptoms and specific symptoms that arise according to the organ involved. Clinical picture is not very typical, especially in new cases, making it quite difficult to diagnose clinically.
Symptoms of systemic / general
  • Fever is not too high that lasts longer, usually felt at night with night sweats. Sometimes an attack of influenza-like fever and intermittent nature.
  • Decreased appetite and weight.
  • Cough-cough for over 3 weeks (may be accompanied by blood).
  • Feelings of not feeling (malaise), weakness.

Specific symptoms 
  • Depending on which organs are affected, in case of partial bronchial obstruction (the channel leading to the lungs) due to pressure of enlarged lymph nodes, will lead to sound "wheezing" sound accompanied by shortness of breath weakened.
  • If there is dirongga pleural fluid (lung packing), may be accompanied by complaints of chest pain.

In children ages 3 months - 5 years who live with adult pulmonary TB patients with smear-positive, 30% were reported infected based on serological examination / blood.
Enforcement of Diagnosis

If someone is suspected of contracting tuberculosis, then a few things that need to be done to establish the diagnosis are:
  • Anamnesa both to patients and their families.
  • Physical examination.
  • Laboratory tests (blood, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid).
  • Examination of anatomic pathology (PA).
  • X-ray chest (thorax photo).
  • Tuberculin test.

Treatment of TB Disease.TB treatment takes longer than treating other types of bacterial infections. If infected with TB, patients should take antibiotics for at least six to nine months. Proper treatment of tuberculosis disease and duration of treatment depends on your age, overall health, drug resistance, type of tuberculosis (latent or active) and its location in the body.

The immune system (defense) can fight the infection and stop the spread of bacteria. The immune system eventually by forming scar tissue surrounding the tuberculosis bacterium, and isolating the entire body. Tuberculosis that occurs after initial exposure of bacteria is often called primary tuberculosis. If the body is able to form scar tissue (fibrosis) around the TB bacteria, the infection is contained in an inactive state. Such individuals usually have no symptoms of tuberculosis and can not spread TB to others.

If a person is infected with latent tuberculosis, may need to take only one medication for the treatment of tuberculosis. Active tuberculosis, especially if it is drug-resistant strain (resistant), would require several drugs at once. The most common drug used to treat tuberculosis, among others, Isoniazid, Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), Ethambutol (Myambutol), and Pyrazinamide.
Side Effects TB Treatment

Tuberculosis treatment side effects are not common but can be serious when it occurs. All TB drugs can be highly toxic to the liver especially people with symptoms of tuberculosis are also accompanied with liver complications (remember that the liver serves to neutralize toxins in the body). It gives a picture that needs a referral or prescription for taking these drugs. Common side effects caused include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, yellow skin (jaundice / jaundice), dark urine, fever that lasts three days or more and have no obvious cause.

    Like the Narycius opalus, the odd-looking Leptodirus hochenwartii or L. hohenwarti has no common name yet. Since it is identified as a cave beetle then it should be named Cave Beetle. It is well adapted to the life underground and unable to survive outside. Its most striking feature is the domed elytrae which cover the abdomen completely and give it a round appearance. This unusual beetle is found in Slovenia.
